I fling back the cover and freeze when I catch sight of the stain of red surrounding me, staining the white sheets.

  He’s right. It’s too late. He has murdered another life. I don’t even want to think how many people he has killed in his obsession for love and acceptance.

  “Consider this your ultimate punishment. I hope you won’t try to escape again. Something worse could always happen.” He stretches out his legs. “From now on it will be just you and me on this yacht.” He shrugs. “And the captain, of course, since we need him to get us to our final destination.”

  When I don’t speak, continuing to stare at the blood leaking out of my body, along with the life that had been growing inside my womb, he lowers himself next to me. When he dares to place a hand on my hip I shove it away.

  “I know you’re upset.” He pushes to his feet. “Don’t worry. The nurse said the bleeding and cramping will ease once the pregnancy tissue comes out. In a few days, you’ll be back to your normal self.”

  I’m about to tell him to fuck off when he lifts a hand to silence me. He pulls his multi-purpose remote from the pocket of his trousers, which he had left hanging on a chair earlier in the evening before he got into bed. “Before I help you clean up, I have a big surprise for you.”

  While I’m still writhing with pain, there’s a soft knock on the door seconds before it’s opened. Otto’s brother enters, Karl following behind him. Neither of them look my way.

  I shut my eyes again when another cramp attacks. This is how I imagine giving birth to feel like. I can’t believe he’s watching me bleeding out without doing a damn thing.

  “No, no, Emma, open your eyes. I need you to see this.”

  Once the pain subsides, I do as he asks.

  My mind is too slow to register what happens next. Everything happens so fast.

  Still smiling, Dax points a gun to the guard’s head only seconds before he pulls the trigger. He doesn’t get a chance to defend himself.

  The scream that pours from my lips rocks my entire body as I watch the guard fall to the floor and Karl lunging for the door. A bullet hits the back of his head before he makes it out.

  Shock renders my next scream inaudible just as Dax gets to me at a speed that makes my head spin. He points the gun to my head this time.

  I steel myself, mentally preparing for my death.

  “Don’t be afraid, my darling. I won’t kill you. Not unless you have a death wish.” He drops the gun. “That was just a small warning. I wanted you to see what will happen if you leave me again.” He sucks in a breath through his teeth. “Next time I won’t be so forgiving. If you try something stupid again, your death will be painful. Yeah, I think I’ll bury you alive under the magnolia tree where I buried my father.”

  He pulls me to his body, not caring about the blood. I tremble in his arms, unable to say a word. This is it. My life is over.

  “No need to cry.” He kisses my sweaty, tear-stained cheek. “Things will be great again as soon as you get better, we’ll get off this yacht to start over. I think it’s time for us to settle down. During my trips to the mainland, I bought us a nice little farm. We’ll live a simple, beautiful life. I can’t wait to make you my farm wife.” He pulls me closer to his side. “Farm life can be tough, but we’re strong together. Till death do us part, remember?”

  I don’t answer.

  Not giving a damn about how I feel, he grips my chin and presses a toxic kiss to my trembling lips.
